EMBODIED JUSTICE
Embodied Justice Program
The Embodied Justice program invites Black racial equity changemakers into a shared learning journey that centers collective healing, rest and embodiment practices that support our joy, personal transformation, sustainability and liberation.
Embodied Justice is about celebrating our resiliency, integrating tools and practices to avoid burnout and exhaustion, and healing trauma from anti-blackness and the demands that come with working toward systems and organizational change. It’s also about building and sustaining our capacity as leaders, learning together and finding refuge in a community that centers our stories and collective experiences.
Through multiple venues for participation, Embodied Justice is providing space to recalibrate, re-vision, reconnect and re-imagine what’s possible when we slow down, breathe, acknowledge the progress we’ve made, and embody the next level of healing and change we envision for ourselves, our organizations and our communities.

What We Heard
In January 2024, CURE hosted listening sessions with Black leaders in the racial equity and justice space to identify our most pressing well-being needs and the resources and structures that will best support individual and collective healing and sustainability. Listening session participants included 27 Black nonprofit staff and consultants. Read the research brief on our listening sessions here and join us on Thursday, May 23 for a webinar discussion on the themes that emerged from the listening sessions.
Everything that I do is in response to the inequities that my brother and my family experienced firsthand.
Watching all of the Black death that started to be celebrated in the media was really starting to affect my mental health. So a big part of what I did was to start to regulate...I stopped absorbing social media in the ways that I had come to think made sense for someone who is invested in systems and institutional change.

In-Person Retreat
August 1-4
The lived experience of harm and injustice is what drew many of us to changemaking work. But as Black changemakers, we are more than our histories of marginalization, trauma and grief. We also carry the gifts of ancestral wisdom, resiliency, culture and community.
Held during Black August and inspired by the collective visions of Black changemakers, the Embodied Justice retreat reflects an imagined future of Black well-being and liberation forged by deep connections with ourselves and each other. This community gathering will harness deep rest, wisdom and imagination to pour into our collective well-being and sustainability.
Space limited to 15 participants. Scholarships available. Click the link below for more information on the retreat and how to join us in August.
