COVID-19 & Black Communities: Crisis, Opportunity and Prescriptions for Change

Thursday, May 7, 6:00 pm-7:30 pm EST

Multiple intersecting racial, class, and gender inequities are driving higher COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths rates in Black communities. Across many of the cities where Black people and families are hardest hit by coronavirus, we see consistent effects of structural racism and economic injustices including a housing affordability crisis, gentrification and displacement, stagnant and low wages, and poorly funded community and public health systems. While racial and health equity advocates and practitioners have sounded the alarm on these and other social determinants for years, the coronavirus pandemic has brought these broken systems and inequities into new focus. During this session panelists will share how COVID-19 is impacting Black communities in cities including New Orleans, Detroit and Miami and offer a vision for an equitable recovery plan focused on systemic change and Black health, wealth, self-care and community power.
